How Much Should You Actually Spend on Ads? Find Your Breakeven ROAS First
Most business owners set their ad budget by gut feel. They pick a number that feels affordable, watch the results for a month, and adjust based on whether it “felt” worth it. The problem is that without knowing your breakeven ROAS first, you have no way to tell if a campaign is actually working — or quietly losing you money on every sale.
What is breakeven ROAS?
Breakeven ROAS is the minimum return you need on every dollar of ad spend just to cover your costs — not to profit, just to not lose money. It depends entirely on your margins: a business with 70% gross margin can break even at a much lower ROAS than one running on 20% margin. Without knowing this number, “3x ROAS” is meaningless on its own — it could be a great result or a losing one, depending on your economics.
Why this matters more than the ROAS your ad platform reports
Meta and Google will happily show you a ROAS number, but they have no idea what your margins are, what a client is worth to your service business, or what profit buffer you actually need to hit your goals. That context only lives with you — which is exactly why so many businesses over- or under-invest in paid media without realizing it.
What the calculator does
This free tool works for two kinds of businesses:
- E-commerce / product sales — enter your average order value and either your product cost or margin %, and it calculates the exact ROAS you need to break even, plus a goal ROAS that bakes in a profit buffer on top.
- Service businesses / lead generation — enter your average deal value, close rate, and delivery margin, and it calculates your breakeven cost per client (and cost per lead) instead, since ROAS isn’t the right lens for a business selling services.
From there, drag the spend slider (or pick a preset) to see exactly what breaking even versus hitting your goal looks like in real orders or clients, revenue, and net profit — at $1,000/month, $5,000/month, or wherever you’re planning to spend.
